The Serangoon Gardens Techno Party of 1993 is the story of one young woman raging against the machine told over the course of a one-night bender as told through an unreliable narrator. We were interested in spatially embodying this metatheatrical setting of the unreliable narrator, and also wanted to capture the younger protagonist’s experience of Singapore in the 1990s.
We began with the idea of two connected enclosures; we were enamoured with the image of an older person beholding her younger self across separate time and space. These layered spaces reflect parallel forms of entrapment while enabling cinematic and theatrical interplay.
YY (Director) was also keen to allow projection/multimedia to shine in with this production; the interior surfaces of the box doubled as projection canvases, supporting fluid shifts in mood, memory, and perspective.
