At its heart, An Adventure is an epic love story inspired by the playwright’s grandparents' lives as twice-migrants. The play traces a couple’s life across India, east-Africa, and the U.K. It is about finding and making home in the face of adversity beyond our control.

I wanted to replicate that sense of environmental hostility in contrast to the humanity and tenderness of the characters onstage. I pitched to Lotte (Director) the metaphor of a bridge, inspired by Do Ho Suh’s artwork Bridging Home. A bridge is for crossing, but what happens when one is forced to make a home while always ready to be on the move?

The eventual design took the form of a monumental, retractable steel bridge. The events of the play play out on this exposed, unaccommodating landscape, and we grow to love and root for the couple as they survive, triumph, and grow old to reflect on their “adventure”.
